On Saturday, I visited Yorkshire Sculpture Park with my boyfriend (and two of our friends) for his birthday. Yorkshire Sculpture Park is an 18th century landscaped garden which accommodates hundreds of sculptures created by world-renowned artists. We had the best day wandering around the premises and admiring beautiful artwork. My favourite piece was Skyspace by James Turrell. He constructed a sculptor of light in a grade II listed deer shelter. When you enter, you walk through a narrow, dark corridor until a bright, tranquil space greets you. There is only one way in and out of the room. The interior is simple; it is painted white and has a concrete bench around its perimeter. These features draw your attention to the ceilings rectangular cut-out that provides a view of the sky. I sat peacefully and enjoyed watching birds fly past and the movement of the clouds. The void allows visitors to appreciate the atmosphere and light without changing anything about the environment. It just encourages people to look up. I find artwork that makes me think, "How did they do that?" the most compelling. A square gap in the roof of the shelter created a powerful and serene effect. We didn't consider the park environment when choosing our footwear. It had rained the day before, so the ground was muddy and one of our friends, foolishly wore white trainers. We were on the hunt for impressive artwork when a Highland cow obstructed our path. I do not fear cows, but this particular breed had long, intimidating horns. We sensibly walked around the animal at a distance where we could admire its beauty but not disturb it. I love the countryside, I prefer the slow pace and to be in a natural environment with enchanting creatures. It is a refreshing and healing experience. Yorkshire Sculpture Park is worth visiting. It is free admission; the only money you need to spend is parking fees. There are so many things to see and facilities for food and drink. I'd recommend designers to visit the park as the mass of artwork will stimulate ideas. James Turrell's Skyspace has influenced me to think about the effect of light and exposing nature in an interior.
