Luckily I live five minutes away from the Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool, so I have been taking my daily strolls across the waterfront. I was pleased to find out that the dock would host The River of Light outdoor exhibition. 11 artworks, a combination of visual and audio installations, decorate the famous waterfront. I decided to visit this exhibition as soon as it went dark.
The Liverpool Echo website posted an article that included a map that helped us navigate the exhibition and find specific artworks. I often visit this area, so I know what to expect in terms of the population throughout the day. However, the dock was much busier than anticipated. Therefore, to avoid large crowds, we took a few longer routes to get to some installations. My favourite piece Light A Wish, by the OCE group, was positioned in front of the Liver building. The artwork consisted of oversized illuminated dandelion seeds. The installation gave me a sense of nostalgia as I was reminded of being a child, closing my eyes and making a wish as I blew away the fluffy dandelion seeds. I believe this installation represents our dreams and desires and is a perfect reminder of our aspirations. We have lived through a difficult time, so it is nice to be reminded about our future goals.
I always connect very strongly with interactive installations. I believe I engage more with the type of artwork that plays with my senses. I would recommend visiting the exhibition as several beautiful pieces enhance Liverpool's waterfront. Since we have been in lockdown for several months, it is excellent to experience art personally. The collection has also inspired me to consider using lighting to create an experience within my latest project.
