Virtual Applicant Visiting Day

I love helping out at university events and promoting my course to others. My tutors invited me to participate in the applicant visiting day a few months ago. As a second-year student, it is vital to share my experiences and answer any questions people may have about my course or university life in general. I remember being in a similar position. I knew I wanted to be a designer but wasn't sure where I should apply. I think opening days are essential and support confused students.

Since the current restrictions have prevented social interactions, the applicant day was virtual. I was okay with this because I could help from the comfort of my home. The session was live on Blackboard. The visitors followed a link that transported them to a chat room, in which staff and students talked about the course. A few days before, we did a practice run. We had several complications; there were issues with microphones, cameras and internet connections. It was slightly concerning. But we fixed it! We figured out that the video chat worked best on google chrome. Something so simple solved all our problems and prevented a potential disaster on the day.

After preparing a presentation, fixing the software and discussing everyone's role, we had a poor turnout. We still performed, as usual, each presenting our slides. Only one participant joined the session who seemed to have technical difficulties, as they kept disappearing. It was a shame as we spent a lot of time organising the talk. However, I understand that not everyone has access to a computer or the internet, preventing them from joining.

Although the applicant day wasn't what I expected, I was glad to have the opportunity to take part. Presenting for an unfamiliar group of people helps me gain confidence and perfect my skills.
