Educational Procrastination

It is challenging completing a module at home. The temptation to stop working and watch a movie is high. So I've started watching design programmes to make myself feel better for not doing uni work. Thankfully, these shows have inspired ideas and encourage me to be creative.

My favourite programme is 'Your Home Made Perfect' on the BBC. Architects Laura Jane Clark and Robert Jamison go head-to-head on home renovation show and use virtual reality to reveal their proposals. I am fascinated by the use of VR. The use of advanced technology can place the clients in their new home. It is an ideal method of presenting proposals to individuals who aren't familiar with design. It's clear that the use of VR aids the architects delivery and helps them sell their schemes. Will the future of interior design and architect consist of this style of presenting? It's exciting to envision a world that uses advanced technology but also quite scary. Advanced technology encourages a lot of changes that we don't necessarily need. Although impressive, not all technology is essential.

Both architects have very different styles. Laura is the founder of Lamp architects. She creates innovative interiors and seeks to enhance the user's experience of their home. Roberts inspired by his travels in India. He pushes the boundaries with his design and attempts to break social constraints and encourage their clients to adapt their way of living. It's interesting to see the diverse designs the architects present. They drastically transform the spaces. I am intrigued by their attention to detail.

I love how they talk through their designs and the reasons behind them. They provide tips and tricks throughout the programme. For instance, Laura suggests angling the windows, within a conservatory, to stop excess light but provide views of the garden. The idea was influenced by the windows at the front of a ship. Robert is interested in creating different levels in an open-plan space to produce zones. Their ingenious ideas have been very enlightening. In one of the episode's, Robert suggests using locally-sourced materials; they are sustainable and unite the community in a project. I plan to adopt this idea within my proposal to refurbish the Oldham Greenhill Community Centre.

I recommend everyone to watch! Heres the link: bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00048xh/episodes/guide
